4worldlovers: My grandfather, John Love Thom, opened his first grocery store in Northeast Harbor, Maine at the age of twenty. I can’t imagine how he procured fresh meat and produce back in those days! Over the years, small independent grocery stores like his all but vanished. I was inspired to create a modern new neighborhood grocery with an old-school twist. The first Austin Thom’s Market opened in 2007 on Barton Springs Road. There are now three locations, including East Riverside and Burnet Road. As a tribute to my grandfather, every store is anchored by an authentic, antique grocery counter, each over 100 years old!
