What does it take to cook a meal with a humanoid robot? Students Steve Han, Mingyo Seo, Hye-Young Chung, Kyutae Sim, Yifan Xu, Yuke Zhu, Seung Hyeon Bang and Carlos Gonzalez, myself and Prof. Yuke Zhu team up to explore this question as well as how we work together as a team from a Team Science perspective.




We had a fantastic year with many talented students in our lab. We said goodbye to UT MS student Mehar Jaiswal and MS visiting student Johannes Drexler from TUM. We look forward to the next generation of students and visitors to come in the summer and fall.


We are very pleased to hear that our former PhD student will become assistant professor in the Mechanical Engineering Department at Texas A&M starting next Fall. Huge congratulations Gray!

His most notable work in the lab was to design a computational framework for strength augmentation of lower body exoskeletons and deploy it in the SAGIT 5 exoskeleton system.

Our paper “Mixtures of Controlled Gaussian Processes for Dynamical Modeling of Deformable Objects” has been accepted for the Learning for Dynamics & Control Conference, 2022. Congratulations to Ce Xu and our collaborators at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC)!

Our collaborative NSF National Research Traineeship grant has been awarded! Dubbed, the NRT-AI: Convergent, Responsible, and Ethical AI Training Experience for Roboticists (CREATE Roboticists) will fund and train multiple generations of PhD students at the intersection between robotics, autonomous systems and ethics. It will create a new portfolio program in ethical robotics to ensure that technology and academic leaders coming from this program have gained expertise and education towards the good use of robotics from a social and labor perspective. We will join forces with faculty across various departments at UT to create a unique program with diverse perspectives.

We have accomplished strength amplification using Apptronik’s SAGIT exoskeleton reducing significantly the effort of operators carrying payloads and performing repetitive movements.

The HCRL, along with 14 other robotics laboratories on campus participated in the ribbon cutting ceremony of our new robotics building. Among the attendees we had the governor or Texas, the secretary of the Army, the president of the university, and the deans of engineering and natural science. It was a splendid day.


Introducing our work on control of liquid cooled viscoelastic bipedal robots. Apptronik developed for UT Austin this excellent humanoid lower body robot, dubbed DRACO, and students at UT’s HCRL lab devised actuator control algorithms and integrated Time-to-Velocity Reversal Locomotion and Whole-Body Locomotion Control algorithms. The result is unsupported dynamic balancing of DRACO. A link to the paper preprint is here (click on the image):


We’re delighted to share that our 2016 paper ControlIt!, is the 5th Most Read paper on IJHR and our 2005 and 2004 IJHR papers on Whole-Body Control are the 3rd and 4th Most Cited papers of IJHR!

This video shows our human-size bipedal robot, Mercury, which has passive ankles, thus relying solely on hip and knee actuation for balance. This capability is not only very difficult to accomplish but enables the robot to rapidly respond to disturbances like those produced when walking around humans.

This paper starts with the speculative fragment: Is it okay for robots to stop objects or other robots that could collide with people?

This paper discusses the coupled dynamics between series-elastic actuators and the multi-dof robotics structure followed by neat trajectory optimization to allow the robot to jump.

To achieve full mechanical potential we must estimate non-conservative uncertainty bounds. This paper proposes a quadric inclusion formulation aimed at greatly increasing control performance of future robotic systems.

I decided to join the Marines to get away from the ghetto I was raised in. I serve for 17 then was medically retired. I pursue school to better myself for my wife and kids and show them that you are never too old to learn and grow. The staff is always helpful and Sean and Mr.Ivon are very knowledgeable of the craft and they make learning fun and interesting. They are the reason why I have a few certifications.
