Hapkido, known as the "Art of Coordinated Power", is a Way of Life, with the goal being Perfection of Character, attained through the coordination of Mind, Body, and Spirit, by practicing meditation, breath control (Ki exercises), and rigorous physical training.

Hapkido is a powerful and innovative martial art. Literally translated, the word Hap means “coordination” or "harmony”, Ki denotes the “essence of power”, and Do means “the art or "The Way".

Hapkido employs powerful kicking with pressure and vital point striking techniques from the unique Korean indigenous art of Tae Kyon and throwing and falling techniques with joint locks and attacks from Japanese Aiki Jujitsu. It is concise and practical, the result of a 1,300 year pursuit of the ultimate lifestyle.

The philosophy of Hapkido stems from three basic principles: The first is non-resistance: yield to your opponent by meeting force with minimum force to deflect and not clash with your opponent's power. The second is circular motion: the use of circular, fluid, flowing movements are emphasized rather than linear movements. The third is the water principle: total penetration of an opponent's defenses through continual attack, adapting to every condition.

Instead of opposing force with force, a Hapkidoist completes their opponent's movement by accepting the flow of energy and redirecting it, culminating in submission or incapacitation of the threat. A practical reality-based martial art and self-defense, Hapkido is not geared toward sport or competition.

The curriculum at Zen Hapkido is certified under Grand Master Bong Soo Han's International Hapkido Federation and has been directly handed down from the late master.

Hapkido classes are rigorous and focus on both physical conditioning and learning new techniques. Class begins and ends with a meditation. After the meditation, the instructor will lead a warmup that involves stretching, core conditioning, and technique drills. Typically after the warm-up students break off into pairs or small groups to work on techniques for their belt test, but the instructor may choose to spend extra class time on specific kicks, techniques, rolls/falling, and conditioning.

You do not have to be an athlete to study Hapkido and age is of no importance. You must simply be willing to commit yourself to an experience that will transform your mind, body, and spirit. Over the years, we taught South Austin students of all ages with a focus on solid martial arts instruction and teaching essential life skills. We first opened in April of 2005 in the Bee Caves area, moved to Athena Montessori Academy and finally our home in the Brodie Oaks shopping center at South Lamar and Ben White. Over the years, we taught hundreds of children and adults in our facilities along with many thousands through seminars and special events in area schools.


We are so proud of the effort shown by our students in their training, and the support they received from their families. Our students embodied our spirit of warriorship with honor, humanity and service to others.

And though we closed our doors at the end of June 2022 with great sadness, we were, in the end, overwhelmed with gratitude that so many were willing to share such an important part of their lives with us and to share our vision of making the world a better place through introspection, courage and community.
